Living Into This Challenging Christian Life With Jesus!

Introduction:

The Christian Life is living out and manifesting the reality of our union and communion with Jesus Christ. Our purpose in life is to be close to The Father! Even in our weakness, the Lord will strengthen us in this relationship as we trust Him! When our Lord Jesus Christ reappears gloriously, we too will be glorified and blameless in Him! Until Jesus’ reappearing, the Christian life is a challenging life – lived out only in union and communion with the Father, through the Son and in the Holy Spirit!

“Progress in Christ is possible, even major progress.” – Bishop Todd Hunter

Theological Theme:

At times God [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] has to ask: “Have you forgotten who I am? Be encouraged! I AM Your Father, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ!” You are my children! I sent my one and only Son to put my life in you! Your children may escape rebuke and correction but my children don’t! Who loves children more, the one who lets them walk right into harm’s way with no consequence, or the One who openly rebukes them, trains them, disciplines them, and makes them free in Christ? Open rebuke is better than secret love!”

Christ Connection:

Jesus is God’s purpose for all creation, therefore, what Jesus did, mankind can now do by His Grace in The Holy Spirit. Our worldview should be the Person of Jesus Christ as mediated to us by the Holy Spirit and met in Holy Scripture. The scripture proclaims that Jesus is the one man for all men and women. Jesus is the One Human Substituting for and Representing all humans. What Jesus did, mankind can do in the Spirit after Jesus! Jesus didn’t do what he did in response to the Father so that you wouldn’t have to do it – Jesus did what he did so you and I could do it too, in participation with Him. Jesus calls out to us:  “Fix your eyes on me and do what I did and still do in you!”

“All of grace means all of man, for the fullness of grace creatively includes the fullness and completeness of our human response in the equation.”  – T.F Torrance

Missional Application:

The Holy Spirit does proclaim to us personally and individually – “You’re included”, but that is not the only word of the gospel. The Holy Spirit also proclaims and moves in us to “Go and Make Disciples!” Salvation, forgiveness, redemption, etc. are not just words to proclaim or thoughts to think individually but actions in relationship to be lived out!

“We’re being discipled and bearing fruit, and therefore we’re being disciplined that we might bear more fruit!” – pastor Timothy Brassell

“Jesus is the only significance. Beside Jesus nothing has any significance. He alone matters.”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Theological Theme:

The Father-Son-and-Spirit-God never commands us to be or do something that He doesn’t first do for us, in our place and on our behalf, so that we can participate with Him in His doing of it!

Christ Connection:

Jesus is the Revelation of Who God is in, for and toward man, AND the Revelation of Who Man is in union, communion and response to God!

Jesus is the WAY God desires a human Being to live and act!

Jesus is the TRUTH God desires for a human being!

Jesus is the LIFE of what God wills for human living!

Missional Application:

“You’re included” is not the only word of the gospel at this time. Along with it is “Go and Make Disciples!”

“Salvation”, “Forgiveness”, “Redemption”, etc. are not just words to proclaim or thoughts to think but are also actions in relationship to be lived out with and for others! The Self-giving, Other-centered Love of the Father, sent through Jesus, is the only Way the Holy Spirit is going to lead us!

Living Into This Challenging Christian Life With Jesus!

Introduction:

“The Christian Life is living out and manifesting the reality of our union with Jesus Christ.” Our purpose in life is to be close to The Father. Even in our weakness, The Lord will strengthen us as we trust Him so that when He returns we will be blameless in our Lord Jesus Christ. But the Christian life is a challenging life – lived out only in the Spirit!

“To be called to a life of extraordinary quality, to live up to it, and yet to be unconscious of it is indeed a narrow way. To confess and testify to the truth as it is in Jesus, and at the same time to love the enemies of that truth, his enemies and ours, and to love them with the infinite love of Jesus Christ, is indeed a narrow way. To believe the promise of Jesus that his followers shall possess the earth, and at the same time to face our enemies unarmed and defenceless, preferring to incur injustice rather than to do wrong ourselves, is indeed a narrow way. To see the weakness and wrong in others, and at the same time refrain from judging them; to deliver the gospel message without casting pearls before swine, is indeed a narrow way. The way is unutterably hard, and at every moment we are in danger of straying from it. If we regard this way as one we follow in obedience to an external command, if we are afraid of ourselves all the time, it is indeed an impossible way. But if we behold Jesus Christ going on before step by step, we shall not go astray.”

― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

For Christians – CHRIST is the WAY. CHRIST is the TRUTH. CHRIST is the LIFE. Jesus Christ is our human behavior. Jesus Christ is our human ethic. JESUS CHRIST is our RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. JESUS CHRIST is our RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR NEIGHBORS and what that looks like. JESUS is HOW our human relating should GLORIFY HIS FATHER. Knowing Who Jesus is also causes us to see more clearly what doesn’t glorify THE FATHER-SON-AND-SPIRIT-GOD.

Theological Theme:

Jesus Christ IS HIMSELF the FINISHED work of God [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit]. There is nothing we add or contribute to it. In Jesus Christ, it really has been completed what God has planned for man.

Christ Connection:

If you/we are to be His disciples, then we are to love Him more than others. The only way we can properly love each other, to have His love for others is to realize that He demands our full allegiance. You are being called to give more and more of yourself wholly and fully to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ wants all of you –every single bit of you at every point of your life – the whole you – with no part of you left out of submission to Him, our loving Lord who is with us always.

“Yes, we are to exhibit deep affections for our closest earthly kin, but Jesus is saying we must love even them less than we do him if we would prove to be genuine disciples. Of course, it’s also true that I will love my family and friends well in direct proportion to the depth of my love for Jesus.” -Jeff Robinson

Missional Application:

The Word comes to us now by The Holy Spirit so we live it out. Because the Word has been completed in Jesus Christ, there is something to participate in – there is something to act out – there is something to live as well as to speak and to think. In Jesus, we can be more of a faithful witness of Him to others that they too may know and trust Him.

We are gathered as the Church because of what happened at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has come upon us – we have received His Holy Spirit. We’re relying now, through The Holy Spirit, on JESUS CHRIST, seeking to give glory to His Father, as we participate with Jesus in His words and in His deeds, and mission outward toward those who are not yet believers.

But if we behold Jesus Christ going on before step by step, we shall not go astray.”

― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Theological Theme:

God ― Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is faithful! THE FATHER IS FAITHFUL TO YOU THROUGH THE SON AND IN THE HOLY SPIRIT! He has called you into fellowship with His Son in The Spirit and, even when you are faithless, He remains faithful to you, and to the world, and to His plan in Jesus Christ for the world. God who is The Father and the Son and The Holy Spirit is Love and God loves you, and every single person, unconditionally while you/we were yet sinners!

Christ Connection:

“We are united to Christ who is bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh, and participate in the risen Humanity of Christ so that we are bone of His bone and flesh of His flesh.”

― T.F. Torrance

JESUS CHRIST IS WHO AND WHAT GOD THE FATHER ALWAYS PLANNED FOR OUR LIVES and what He planned our humanity to be like and look like and to act like. Jesus came to give us fulness of life – His life. Jesus is the Christ of Life! We as Christians are called to participate in, LIVE INTO, Someone Who is already there for us, and as we live into Him, He bears fruit because it is the fruit of Him! Being a Christian means being united INTO the life of Jesus Christ. We are called to continue to live as those united to Jesus Christ by the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is the way of our human being and therefore he is the truth of what real humanity is in God’s mind and eyes. JESUS is the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE!

Missional Application:

2000 years ago, The Father through Jesus Christ sent us The Holy Spirit so that we could be in union with Jesus Christ and participate with Jesus in His relationship with The Father. That is what true worship is. Participating with Jesus Christ in His relationship with His Father.

What Jesus did for and does for us, The Holy Spirit comes and works out in us SO THAT WE MIGHT SHARE The Son’s life WITH OTHERS, worshiping God in witnessing to this God revealed in Jesus Christ. So, we can say the Holy Spirit humanizes us by making us share in the glorified humanity of Christ.

“The Holy Spirit is “for all” in just the same way that Jesus Christ is for everyone who was created through him. The Father sends the Spirit for the same purpose as he sent the Son. But the Spirit is able to be present in a range of ways…

…as the Holy Spirit works, we become like Christ, exhibiting the spiritual fruit of his perfected humanity. The primary center of that fruit, as Paul describes it, is love….

The Holy Spirit shares with us the sanctified humanity of Jesus, which makes us fully human, more completely human, more personal, filling us up with the fruit of the Spirit. True spirituality is mature humanity in full and right relationship with God.” – Guidelines to an Understanding of the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, by Dr. Gary Deddo

The Great Fall Of Jerusalem!

Main Passages: 2 Chronicles 36:11-21 Jeremiah 38:14-1824-28

“One of the most important events in the Old Testament era was the fall of Jerusalem and the capture of God’s people. Due to the hard-heartedness of the people and their leaders, including the despising of His Word, God displayed His justice and wrath through His punishment of His people. Yet even here, in this display of God’s justice, we see how God preserves a remnant of people who will carry the hope of His promise to make all things new through a Messiah.” – The Gospel Project

Theological Theme:

God [ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] patiently pursues sinners, but His patience will one day come to an end.

Christ Connection:

God righteously punished His people for their sin, but He remained faithful to them and kept the promise He made to David to preserve a remnant and provide a king. Ultimately, God punished our sin through His Son, Jesus, and made Him our King forever.

Missional Application:

God, through His Holy Spirit, calls us to listen to His Word and proclaim His patience and righteousness to others while there is still time.

Main Passages: Jeremiah 17:1-10 Jeremiah 31:31-34

The heart of humanity is desperately wicked and in need of replacement. Because no one is able to perfectly obey the law, God promised a new covenant, one not written on stone or parchment but written instead on the hearts of His people. This is a promise concerning the coming day of Jesus, fulfilled in the gospel. In the gospel, God not only writes His law on our hearts but also gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit, who indwells every believer. – The Gospel Project

Theological Theme:

In the new covenant, we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit, who enables us to obey God’s [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] law.

Christ Connection:

The problem in Jeremiah’s day was the people had God’s law but were unable to obey Him due to the sinfulness of their hearts. Jeremiah prophesied about a coming day when God would forgive sin and write His law on the hearts of His people. This prophecy is fulfilled in the gospel. Through Jesus, God offers us forgiveness. Through the Holy Spirit, God enables us to obey His commands.

Missional Application:

God calls us to rely on the Holy Spirit as we obey God’s commands and live on mission for His kingdom.

“A new heart [is] compelled by the Spirit to obedience. It is a voluntary obedience springing from a heart that has been transformed and captivated by the Redeemer.”  –Timothy Lane and Paul David Tripp

Main Passage: Jeremiah 1:4-10

“Jeremiah was called, even before he was born, to be God’s prophet. Because his prophetic message was contrary to what his people wanted to hear, Jeremiah faced opposition and persecution. Nevertheless, Jeremiah remained faithful to God’s call despite the obstacles. In Jeremiah’s grief, we see a picture of the tender heart of God, most fully expressed in Jesus’ weeping for the unrepentant people of Jerusalem. From Jeremiah, we also learn that the God who calls us to deliver His message is the God who will empower us for His mission.” – The Gospel Project

Theological Theme:

God  [ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] equips those He has chosen to minister in His name.

Christ Connection:

Jeremiah’s love for his people was so great that he often delivered God’s message in tears, to the point that he is known as the “weeping prophet.” In Jeremiah’s grief, we see a picture of the tender heart of God, most fully expressed in Jesus’ weeping for the people of Jerusalem who would not repent.

Missional Application:

God, through  His Holy Spirit, calls us to trust Him to overcome the obstacles we may face in carrying out His mission in our lives.

“The Lord delivers…not so that the prophet will be free of persecutions and difficulties, for we read that Jeremiah was severely afflicted. Instead, the Lord liberates one who suffers everything to overcome these tribulations rather than yielding to them.”  –Jerome (circa 345-420)

Main Passage: Jonah 1-4

“God [Father, Son and Spirit] goes to great lengths to pursue people, even when they have no interest in being found. God pursues sinners of all kinds in order to bring them to Himself. Jonah was a prophet who rejected God’s call and ran away from his enemies. Unlike Jonah, Jesus heard God’s call and ran toward His enemies. While we were still sinners, He died for us, and now He commissions us as His people to pursue others with the good news of His love.” – The Gospel Project

Theological Theme:

Salvation belongs to God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Christ Connection:

Jonah was a prophet who rejected God’s call and ran away from his enemies. Jesus heard God’s call and ran toward His enemies. While we were still sinners, He died for us.

Missional Application:

God through His Holy Spirit, calls us to put aside our tribal attitudes and break down walls as we share the news that forgiveness is possible through repentance and faith.

“God breaks down walls and leads His people out into the world with good news: forgiveness is possible through repentance and faith. Tribal attitudes melt away when constantly exposed to the warm embrace of our missionary God.” –Trevin Wax

“The life and, in particular, the marriage of God’s prophet Hosea shows us the great lengths that God goes to in order to pursue the people He loves. Despite our unfaithfulness, God loves us still and is willing to take on the personal cost and sacrifice of bringing us into and keeping us in right relationship with Him. Because of His love, God continually goes after unfaithful people like us, and in this pursuit, He provides a model for how we are to pursue others with the good news of His love.” – The Gospel Project

“The ultimate happiness in life is the conviction that one is loved; loved for oneself—better still loved in spite of oneself.” – Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Main Passages: Hosea 1:2-9; 2:14-23; 3:1-5

Theological Theme

The initiative for our salvation is in the loving heart of God- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

“He lifts us up out of ourselves to participate in the very life and communion of the Godhead, that life of communion for which we were created.” – J.B. Torrance, Worship Community and the Triune God of Grace. (Pg. 22)

Christ Connection:

Hosea’s relationship with Gomer reminds us of God’s relationship with the people of Israel, and with us. Even though God’s people are unfaithful and love other things more than God, God still loves us. It was because of His love that God sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sin and bring us back to Him.

“He [Jesus] does not appease an angry God to condition Him into being gracious, but in perfect acknowledgment of the holy love of the Father for a sinful world, seals God’s covenant purposes for all humanity by His blood.” – J.B. Torrance, Worship Community and the Triune God of Grace(Pg. 49)

Missional Application:

God through His Holy Spirit calls us to pursue others with the good news about the God who pursues us at great cost to Himself.
