“Belonging To Christ!”

Study By Sherwin Scott

And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ.”
Romans 1:6 (NLT)

What a blessing, privilege and honour it is, for those who are called, to belong to Jesus Christ, the Father’s beloved Son. The amazing truth about this special calling is that it cannot be changed: ‘For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.’ (Romans 11:29). As human beings we all have a need to belong, and to have an identity. We are born into a family, and that family is part of a tribe, clan, or nation. We also belong to a specific racial group, and we belong to the human race.

Belonging to someone or something is vitally important to human beings. The good news for believers is that we belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God (1 Corinthians 3:23). As believers our identity is in Jesus Christ and no other; we in Christ and Christ in us is our  hope of glory and eternal life: ‘For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.’ (Colossians 1:27).

We are also called to be saints and into the fellowship of Jesus, (1 Corinthians 1:2 and 9), where we participate in a relationship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ: the beloved children of the living God who loves us. This amazing life that we have as believers, however, does not belong to us, it belongs to God: ‘Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.’ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

One of my favourite hymns is Blessed Assurance. It reminds me of my mother who used to sing it while she was doing household chores. The first verse states:

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine; Oh what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in his blood.

Yes, the Father paid a very high price for us. The life of His beloved Son.

Prayer
Abba Father, thank you for calling me to belong to Jesus. Please enable me to treat this special calling as the precious gift that it is. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

“Union And Communion!”

Study By Sherwin Scott

But he [or she] who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.”

1 Corinthians 6:17 (ESV)

Union and communion are the exciting call of the Christian life. God is an eternal relationship of three: God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We are told that believers are called to share or participate in this divine relationship: ‘God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’ (1 Corinthians 1:9). The ‘fellowship of His Son’ is the holy, loving relationship of the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit, a relationship which has existed from eternity, and will continue forever! What a blessing, privilege and honor to be called to participate in this wonderful relationship: communion with our triune God.

Also, as believers, we belong to Jesus Christ (Romans 1:6); in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). So, we are now in union with the very Son of God. He is our life, and we have no other life apart from the life that we have been blessed with, which is in Christ: ‘When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.’ (Colossians 3:4).

This divine calling to union and communion with Jesus Christ cannot be revoked (Romans 11:29). For us life can only get better because we are in union and communion with the very Son of God, our Creator and Redeemer. As we all know and experience, life is full of trials and challenges. But the Apostle Paul tells us that these are all working together for our good: ‘And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.’ (Romans 8:28). As brothers and sisters in Christ we share in a holy, heavenly calling (Hebrews 3:1). God is not playing games with us; He is forming the image or likeness of Jesus Christ in us (Galatians 4:19) and building a relationship with us that will last forever. Union and communion – what an amazing calling!

Prayer
Abba Father, thank you for calling me into your holy, loving relationship, and by the Spirit uniting me to Jesus Christ. In His name, I pray, Amen.

“A Love Relationship!”

Study By Sherwin Scott

“God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:9 (NIVUK)

It is natural for people to ponder the meaning of life. What is the purpose of life? Why were we born? Why are we here on this comparatively small planet called earth?

For those who believe what is written in the Bible, the answer to the above questions has been revealed. And it is all centered on Jesus Christ, who “is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:15-17). “All things” include the human family. We have been created to be in a brotherly, friendship, and love relationship with the very Son of God. And we have been included and accepted in the relationship that he has with the Father and the Spirit.

Believers are then invited to his wedding: “Then the angel said to me, ‘Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ And he added, ‘These are the true words of God.’” (Revelation 19:9). Fellowship with Jesus the Son also includes loving and serving one another, the children of God, for Christ lives in them. How can we know for certain that we are called into fellowship with Jesus and invited to his wedding as the bride of Christ? If we believe, as the apostle Peter writes, that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16), then a miracle has happened to us and we are the recipients of the gift of faith and God’s grace. Just like Peter, no human spiritual leader revealed that understanding to us. Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, none of these biblical leaders revealed to Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. It was the Father who opened Peter’s mind to the reality of the identity of Jesus Christ. It has been the same with all believers ever since. Only the Father can reveal to us that Jesus is the Christ, the beloved Son of God. (John 6:44, 65). He is the One who initiates the call to fellowship with the Son whom he loves and instructs us to listen to him. (Mark 9:7).

That is the purpose of us being here on earth, a love relationship with the Son of God. After all, he first loved us! Because God is faithful, he will never leave nor forsake us, he will always be with us as we grow into fellowship with Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul understood the importance of this relationship with Jesus. “But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:7–8). As we make this amazing and special calling our first and most important priority, then everything else will fall into place.

Prayer
Thank you Father, for calling me into the holy, loving relationship that Jesus shares with you and the Holy Spirit. A relationship that has existed from eternity and will continue forever.

Amen

“A Rich Welcome Into The Eternal Kingdom!”

Study by Sherwin Scott

“And you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:11 (NIVUK)

Would you like to receive a rich welcome into God’s eternal kingdom? That is what has been promised to all believers. The welcoming party will be the Father, the Son, the Spirit, and the holy angels. The life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ guarantees a rich welcome to all who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. It requires the gift of faith to believe that Jesus is the Christ, God’s own Son. The same faith that the apostle Peter demonstrated. (Matthew 16:16–17). Once we know that we have received the gift of faith, we are then instructed to make every effort to confirm our calling and election. “Add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7). For if we do these things, we will never stumble. All these attributes are also gifts from God our Father. “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (James 1:17).

It is clearly God’s will that we exercise these gifts, adding them to the faith that we have already received. If we think that we lack any of these precious gifts, we must then ask in believing prayer. “This is the confidence which we have before him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from him.” (1 John 5:14-15). A rich welcome into God’s eternal kingdom awaits all who believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And who put their trust in him to answer the above prayer for these additional gifts which are synonymous with the fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5: 22-23. These gifts, including faith, are more precious than gold or silver which perishes over time and more valuable than money which can lose its value at any time! It is God’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom. Can you just imagine what a rich welcome into that kingdom will be like: the fanfare; the music; the glory; the joy.

Prayer

Father in heaven, I thank you for the amazing future that you have prepared for those who have received the gift of faith. Please add to my faith the fruit of the Spirit.  In Jesus’ s name I pray.
 Amen

“Passing Away!”

Study by Sherwin Scott

When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

 Colossians 3:4 (ESV)

Today we are living in what can be described as a troubled world – a world where many people are experiencing pain, suffering, displacement and untimely death as a result of war, crime, disease, and poverty from various causes. Countries that are in the forefront of suffering and displacement include, among others, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad, Sudan, Bangladesh, Haiti and Ukraine. Just in the last few weeks, a UN-backed peacekeeping force of Kenyan police have been sent to Haiti where the island nation is being terrorised by armed criminal gangs.

Jesus Christ is the only one who can restore order and justice to our troubled world. The Bible clearly shows that he will return to usher in a world of peace and security. As the header scripture shows, it is just a matter of timing – ‘when’ and not ‘if’ – for he is the King of kings, the Lord of lords and the Prince of peace. Jesus has been given a mandate, from God the Father, to bring justice to this world: ‘Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations…He will not grow faint or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law.’ (Isaiah 42:1,4).

Our present evil world is in transition, it will not continue forever! ‘…For the present form of this world is passing away’ (1 Corinthians 7:31). ‘…but whoever does the will of God abides forever’ (1 John 2:17).

When the timing is right, Jesus Christ will dramatically intervene in the affairs of our world to usher in a new heavens and a new earth where, ‘…The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind…be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create (Isaiah 65:17,18 NIV). At that time we are told, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:4 ESV).

Prayer
Eternal Father, thank you that this present troubled world is passing away. We look forward to Jesus’s return and to the fullness of your kingdom, bringing righteousness and peace throughout all the earth. In Jesus’s name, Amen.

“The Gift of Repentance!”

Study by Sherwin Scott

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”
James 1:17 (ESV)

According to Wikipedia, repentance is reviewing one’s actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by a commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. For a Christian, it is when the believer acknowledges and puts their trust in Jesus Christ, turning away from sin.

In Luke 13:3-5 Jesus warns that “…unless you repent, you will all likewise perish…” It is repeated for emphasis (v.5). But in reality, God is not willing that anyone should perish:  ‘The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.’ (2 Peter 3:9 emphasis mine).

We cannot make ourselves repent by being sorry for the wrong things that we have done because true repentance is a gift from God: ‘…do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? (Romans 2:4 NKJV).

It is clearly God’s will that we receive, or we are granted, the gift of repentance, and we can go to God in believing prayer and request this gift. And because it is God’s will for us to repent of sins, the prayer will be answered, the request will be granted: ‘And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.’ (1 John 5:14-15 ESV).

In addition, we pray in Jesus’s name because fundamentally, He is the human who has repented on our behalf and in our place. Our repentance is only a share in Jesus’ repentance by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 19:4, Matthew 3:13-17) And Jesus tells us: “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.“(John 14:13-14).

So we can pray with confidence for the gift of repentance, and it will be granted, BECAUSE, IN THE HUMANITY OF JESUS IT HAS ALREADY BEEN GRANTED TO US AS A GRACIOUS GIFT! Will you receive it and participate with Jesus?

Prayer
Eternal Father, thank you that I can come into your presence and let all of my requests be made known to you. Please grant
me the gift of repentance. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

“Abraham, a Friend of God!”

Word of Life Devotional by Sherwin Scott

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:6 (ESV)

Abraham was called the friend of God and father of us all: ‘…and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.’ (James 2:23).

What was so special about Abraham that he is known as a friend of God?

He was blessed with the gift of faith. He was fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was counted to him as righteousness. Abraham’s faith being counted to him as righteousness was not written just for Abraham alone, it applies to all who believe in God’s promises: ‘…the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord…’ (Romans 4:23-24).

We can fully believe that the ‘good work’ that the Father began in every believer will be completed. And what exactly is that good work? ‘…my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!’ (Galatians 4:19). Through the Holy Spirit, the Father is forming the very image of His beloved Son in every believer.

With the very same gift of faith that God gave to Abraham and that he gives to us today, we can completely trust him to fulfill all his promises. ‘For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.’ (2 Corinthians 1:20). As we believe God’s promise to complete the ‘good work’ that he began in each of us, that faith will also be credited to us as righteousness, the same as Abraham.

So, like Abraham, we too can be friends of God credited with righteousness.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for the gift of faith which enables me to believe your precious promises and to be credited with righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“God In Relationship!”

Word of Life Devotional by Sherwin Scott

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
2 Corinthians 13:14 (ESV)

For many people in their journey of faith, God is an enigma – someone who is mysterious or puzzling. They may struggle to know God or may ask who or what he is.
In a faith journey, many will see God as someone in the sky, invisible but somehow able to watch us here below. Many will think of God as a singular person, invisible and ruling over everything. For example, Islam refers to God as Allah, a very powerful singular person.
The astonishing truth is that God is far greater than anything we can think of or imagine. God is a being who is three divine persons in relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – one Being who is Three Persons.
The Father, the Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are all distinct – yet they exist in perfect unity. The Apostle Paul refers to this unity when he writes, ‘And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.’ (2 Corinthians 3:3)
God offers a holy, loving relationship: a fellowship or communion that believers are destined to participate in as the children of God (Ephesians 1:3-6). God is building a relationship with each and every one of us. We are created to experience this relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – we are all included in his love and grace.
The Father is calling us now to participate in this amazing relationship. As it says in 1 Corinthians 1:9: ‘God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’ And Romans 11:29 tells us: ‘…the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.’
It is encouraging to know that God is not going to change his mind about calling us, may He help us to respond wholeheartedly.

Prayer
Father in heaven, please enable us to understand Who You are in Your Relationship with the Son and Holy Spirit. Help us to understand your calling and respond in a manner that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“A Divine Calling!”

Word of Life Devotional by Sherwin Scott

Therefore, holy brothers [and sisters], you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession…
Hebrews 3:1 (ESV)

Many people consider themselves to be called to a specific profession or service. They believe that they have been called to be doctors, lawyers, and teachers, or to serve in the armed forces or the local or national government of their country. Maybe they feel they are called to be the leader of a nation as president or prime minister.

Believers in Jesus Christ have received a specific and definite calling into his fellowship.  The Apostle Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 1:9: ‘God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.’ What exactly is ’the fellowship of his Son’? It is the holy, loving relationship of God the Father, Jesus the beloved Son and the Holy Spirit – a divine relationship that has existed from eternity and will continue forever!

Believers are blessed, privileged, and honored to be called to participate or share in this wonderful relationship. It doesn’t get any better – it is finding the pearl of great value (Matthew 13:45-46), the ultimate calling! And an amazing truth about this special calling is that it cannot be revoked as explained in Romans 11:29: ‘For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.’

Relationships are very important to God, for God is in relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a communion of love. And he wants us as his children to participate in the divine relationship, which will continue forever. With this divine calling there is no going back, for God takes no pleasure in anyone who draws back (Hebrews 10:36-38). There is only one way – marching forward into the fullness of God’s glorious kingdom.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for the invitation to participate in your beautiful relationship. Please help me to respond in a manner that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.
