Living Into This Challenging Christian Life With Jesus!

Introduction:

The Christian Life is living out and manifesting the reality of our union and communion with Jesus Christ. Our purpose in life is to be close to The Father! Even in our weakness, the Lord will strengthen us in this relationship as we trust Him! When our Lord Jesus Christ reappears gloriously, we too will be glorified and blameless in Him! Until Jesus’ reappearing, the Christian life is a challenging life – lived out only in union and communion with the Father, through the Son and in the Holy Spirit!

“Jesus is the only significance. Beside Jesus nothing has any significance. He alone matters.”
― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

Theological Theme:

The Father-Son-and-Spirit-God never commands us to be or do something that He doesn’t first do for us, in our place and on our behalf, so that we can participate with Him in His doing of it!

Christ Connection:

Jesus is the Revelation of Who God is in, for and toward man, AND the Revelation of Who Man is in union, communion and response to God!

Jesus is the WAY God desires a human Being to live and act!

Jesus is the TRUTH God desires for a human being!

Jesus is the LIFE of what God wills for human living!

Missional Application:

“You’re included” is not the only word of the gospel at this time. Along with it is “Go and Make Disciples!”

“Salvation”, “Forgiveness”, “Redemption”, etc. are not just words to proclaim or thoughts to think but are also actions in relationship to be lived out with and for others! The Self-giving, Other-centered Love of the Father, sent through Jesus, is the only Way the Holy Spirit is going to lead us!

Living Into This Challenging Christian Life With Jesus!

Introduction:

“The Christian Life is living out and manifesting the reality of our union with Jesus Christ.” Our purpose in life is to be close to The Father. Even in our weakness, The Lord will strengthen us as we trust Him so that when He returns we will be blameless in our Lord Jesus Christ. But the Christian life is a challenging life – lived out only in the Spirit!

“To be called to a life of extraordinary quality, to live up to it, and yet to be unconscious of it is indeed a narrow way. To confess and testify to the truth as it is in Jesus, and at the same time to love the enemies of that truth, his enemies and ours, and to love them with the infinite love of Jesus Christ, is indeed a narrow way. To believe the promise of Jesus that his followers shall possess the earth, and at the same time to face our enemies unarmed and defenceless, preferring to incur injustice rather than to do wrong ourselves, is indeed a narrow way. To see the weakness and wrong in others, and at the same time refrain from judging them; to deliver the gospel message without casting pearls before swine, is indeed a narrow way. The way is unutterably hard, and at every moment we are in danger of straying from it. If we regard this way as one we follow in obedience to an external command, if we are afraid of ourselves all the time, it is indeed an impossible way. But if we behold Jesus Christ going on before step by step, we shall not go astray.”

― Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship

For Christians – CHRIST is the WAY. CHRIST is the TRUTH. CHRIST is the LIFE. Jesus Christ is our human behavior. Jesus Christ is our human ethic. JESUS CHRIST is our RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. JESUS CHRIST is our RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR NEIGHBORS and what that looks like. JESUS is HOW our human relating should GLORIFY HIS FATHER. Knowing Who Jesus is also causes us to see more clearly what doesn’t glorify THE FATHER-SON-AND-SPIRIT-GOD.

Theological Theme:

Jesus Christ IS HIMSELF the FINISHED work of God [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit]. There is nothing we add or contribute to it. In Jesus Christ, it really has been completed what God has planned for man.

Christ Connection:

If you/we are to be His disciples, then we are to love Him more than others. The only way we can properly love each other, to have His love for others is to realize that He demands our full allegiance. You are being called to give more and more of yourself wholly and fully to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ wants all of you –every single bit of you at every point of your life – the whole you – with no part of you left out of submission to Him, our loving Lord who is with us always.

“Yes, we are to exhibit deep affections for our closest earthly kin, but Jesus is saying we must love even them less than we do him if we would prove to be genuine disciples. Of course, it’s also true that I will love my family and friends well in direct proportion to the depth of my love for Jesus.” -Jeff Robinson

Missional Application:

The Word comes to us now by The Holy Spirit so we live it out. Because the Word has been completed in Jesus Christ, there is something to participate in – there is something to act out – there is something to live as well as to speak and to think. In Jesus, we can be more of a faithful witness of Him to others that they too may know and trust Him.

We are gathered as the Church because of what happened at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit has come upon us – we have received His Holy Spirit. We’re relying now, through The Holy Spirit, on JESUS CHRIST, seeking to give glory to His Father, as we participate with Jesus in His words and in His deeds, and mission outward toward those who are not yet believers.

The Spirit of Truth and Generosity!

Bible Verses: Acts 4:32Acts 5:11

“Generosity should be a defining characteristic of the church because God is generous. The Father gave His Son. The Son gave His life. The Father and the Son gave the Spirit. And the Spirit gives the followers of Christ hearts of generosity. The Spirit works through these hearts to bring unity to the body of Christ through their loving support for one another. Greed is contrary to who God is and invites His judgment. The Holy Spirit of God helps us distinguish between generous and greedy giving.”

“Generosity is a fruit of God’s grace, something that an individual
should feel compelled to do from their own hearts. While in one way this understanding liberates us from any legalism around giving, it simultaneously heightens our expectations for giving. Because generosity flows from the heart, it is a tangible way of seeing the condition of the heart. This is why Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21).

Theological Theme:
Sin in the Church must not stand in the way of the gospel’s expansion.

Christ Connection:
In obedience to the Holy Spirit’s prompting, the early Christians shared their resources and gave generously to those in need, just as Jesus gave up heavenly riches to share His inheritance with all who trust in Him. But Ananias and Sapphira’s deceptive action was a sin against the church and against the Spirit. The Spirit distinguishes between giving that is from a heart of generosity and giving that is greedy and deceitful.

“Jesus serves as our model for radical giving and the Holy Spirit enables us to follow in His steps.”

“In following Jesus, we’re invited to do the same, not clinging to what we have but giving it away, becoming a servant, and allowing God to multiply it for His good and glory in His church and in the world around us. The Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives should inspire such radical generosity, transforming our hearts to mirror Jesus’ own so that we don’t cling to what’s “ours” by rights but give it away to those in need.

Missional Application:
God the Father, through His Holy Spirit, calls us to show our unity with other believers, always being generous and honest as a reflection of Christ’s truth and love.

Bible Verses: Acts 6:8-15; 7:44-60

“In this session, we will see how God’s Holy Spirit empowers the followers of Christ to endure suffering for the sake of Christ. Whether that suffering takes the form of false accusations, death, or other variations, our faithful witness in the midst of suffering is a testimony to Jesus Christ, who came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets and to save us from our sin. When we suffer in faith, we are following in the footsteps of our Savior and bearing witness to His worth above all things, even our very lives.”- The Gospel Project

Theological Theme:

God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit strengthens his people to testify to Jesus Christ in persecution and death.

Christ Connection:

In his death as the first martyr, Stephen followed in the footsteps of His Savior. Both Jesus and Stephen were falsely accused and charged for blasphemy. Both Jesus and Stephen prayed for their executioners. Both Jesus and Stephen entrusted their spirits to God as they died. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Stephen reflected His Master, in life and in death.

Missional Application:

God the Father, through His Holy Spirit, calls us to bear witness to the greatness of Jesus Christ, even when we are maligned or persecuted for our faith.

“The history of the church is rich with stories of Christians who, emboldened by the Spirit, faced suffering and death while testifying to Jesus. Missionaries have died while going to share the gospel with hostile people. Countless martyrs the world over and through ages past have faced torture and death for their faith in the risen Savior…..

The persecution of the church and the martyring of its people is like the pruning of a plant. It grows stronger, richer, and more deeply rooted as a result…..

As we face ridicule and persecution for our faith, we are following in the faithful steps of these martyrs, just as they were following in the trailblazing steps of the Savior. He gave Himself for us—may it be our joy to give ourselves for the glory of His name.” – The Gospel Project

Bible Verses: Acts 1:4-14,  Ephesians 1:23

This is a Gospel message preached on Ascension Sunday 2019

Theological Theme:

Jesus’ Ascension is as important as every other facet of his life and work because it is the sphere within creation in which he can be in every place, filling everything everywhere with his presence.

Christ Connection:

Jesus, the Son of Man and Son of God has lifted humanity up into heaven, in himself, in order that he might continue to share his present love and life, extending his loving authority over all things in heaven and earth! He sends us the Spirit from there that we might be adopted, personally and collectively, in relational union and communion with him.

Missional Application:

From his place of Ascension Jesus continues to draw humanity to himself, calling each one to participate with him in his relationship with his Father in the Spirit. The Father’s Mission and Will is that his children would presently become disciple-makers and participate with Jesus in making him known – from the least to the greatest!
