Scripture: Zechariah 3, 6 & 13

Summary:

For centuries God’s people waited. They lived with promises spoken long before they were born. Promises of a coming King, a righteous Priest, and a Branch who would bring life where there once appeared to be only deadness. Through the prophet Zechariah, the Father revealed that history was moving toward a Person. These promises were never merely about future events. They were always about Jesus Christ.

In this message, Pastor Tony Marra invites us to rediscover how Zechariah’s remarkable prophecies find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ and what they continue to reveal about the Father’s eternal purpose for humanity.

Biblical prophecy reveals more than God’s knowledge of the future. It reveals His faithfulness. Long before Bethlehem, Calvary, or the empty tomb, the Father was already proclaiming His Son and assuring His people that His gracious purpose could never fail.

Karl Barth beautifully captures this truth: “The doctrine of election is the sum of the Gospel because of all words that can be said or heard it is the best: that God elects man; that God is for man too, the One who loves in freedom. It is grounded in the knowledge of Jesus Christ because He is both the electing God and elected man in One.” — Church Dogmatics, II/2

God’s promise of a coming King is therefore far more than the prediction of a future ruler. It is the revelation of the Father’s eternal purpose to reconcile humanity through His beloved Son.

Zechariah speaks of “the Branch” who would remove the guilt of the land in a single day. What was anticipated under the old covenant was fully accomplished in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension, He bore our sin, defeated death, reconciled us to the Father, and opened the way into the fellowship of the Triune God. The Gospel is not that humanity finally found its way to God. The Gospel is that God, in Jesus Christ, came to humanity.

The promised King is unlike every earthly ruler. Zechariah describes Him as righteous, victorious, and yet humble, entering Jerusalem on a donkey rather than a warhorse. His Kingdom is established not through force but through self-giving love. Every promise of God finds its “Yes” in Him, and through His reign the Father is reconciling the world to Himself.

Yet Zechariah’s vision reaches even further. The Branch would also build the Lord’s Temple. No longer confined to a building made with human hands, God’s presence is now revealed in Jesus Christ, the true Temple, who by the Holy Spirit gathers His people into His own life.

As James B. Torrance reminds us: “The Christian worshipper is one who is given, through the Spirit, a share in the Son’s communion with the Father.” — Worship, Community and the Triune God of Grace

This is the glorious fulfillment of Zechariah’s vision. Through the Holy Spirit we are united to Christ, becoming His living Body and the dwelling place of God. The Church is not simply a community that remembers Jesus; it is the community through which the risen Lord continues His ministry in the world.

Pastor Tony also reminds us that this King continues His work through seasons of testing. Zechariah speaks of God’s people being refined like silver and tested like gold. Trials are not evidence of God’s absence but opportunities through which the Holy Spirit deepens our trust in Christ and conforms us more fully to His likeness.

In an age that places its confidence in technology, political systems, or human achievement, Zechariah calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus Christ. He alone is the humble and victorious King whose Kingdom cannot be shaken. His promises remain certain because they rest not upon our faithfulness, but upon His.

Reflective Moment:

Where have you been looking for security, hope, or peace? The Father has already fulfilled His greatest promise in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, resurrection, and ascension, He has reconciled humanity to Himself and poured out the Holy Spirit so that we might share in His life. Whatever uncertainties surround us today, we can rest confidently in the unshakable Kingdom of our humble and victorious King.
